Wednesday night’s “Internet Safety” presentation by
Detective Chuck Stankye was informative and eye opening. The presentation consisted of a variety
of information such as ground rules for computer usage by children, involvement
and interest in what your child knows about the internet, warning signs that a
child may be getting in trouble, and a brief overview of the workings of a
pedophile. There was a video
depicting an attempted abduction by a pedophile gone wrong, a power point
presentation, and a news reel of a Connecticut girl who was murdered by a
pedophile she engaged online. Detective
Stankye gave a brief synopsis of the police ability to view and obtain
information online to prevent or solve crimes, what to look out for, what
information to never give online and how to be aware of using the internet
safely and more appropriately. He
also provided a list of texting abbreviations and what they mean. Detective Stankye stressed the warnings
of pictures on the internet, facebook, twitter, bullying and sexting. We also received a parent child
contract and a list of website references. Many thanks to Detective Stankye.
I would like to give a big THANK YOU to Jen Shuart and
Suzanne Foley for inviting Detective Stankye to give his presentation. It definitely was an evening of
education and information to reflect upon as well as a tool to help educate
ourselves, as parents, and our children.
A special thanks to the hospitality committee for all their help and to the social committee which provided
a lovely variety of cheeses, fruits, desserts and refreshments. Kudos!
