St. Mary-St. Michael School to honor alumni, friends at dinner- The New Haven Register - Serving New Haven, Connecticut


DERBY - Six alumni and friends of St. Mary-St. Michael Elementary School will be recognized March 23 in the University Commons at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

The dinner event starts at 6 p.m. and will feature plate stations with four gourmet selections on the menu, wine and beverages, award presentations, and more.

A keepsake program book is being produced and advertisements, congratulatory and in memoriam messages are available by contacting the school office.

The admission cost is $40 a person with tables of 10 available for $350.
Reservations are requested by March 18 and may be made by contacting Principal Linda Coppola at lcoppola@stmarystmichael.org or 203-735-6471.

St. Mary-St. Michael School was created in 1988 when St. Mary School (est. 1898) and St. Michael School (est. 1915) merged.

Honorees include:

Elizabeth “Betty” Tiano has made service to others a hallmark of her life. She served as a Girl Scout leader in the 1950s. Her sons, Gene and Father Chris Tiano are proud graduates of St. Mary School and Fairfield Prep.

She was a tireless worker for the school serving as a room mother, Mother’s Club President and president of the Home and School Association. She baked, raised money, ran fairs and tried her best to support the school and its programs. Along the way she was one of the go-to drivers for the Sisters of Mercy.

She also worked for the Public School System as an aide at St. Michael’s School. She was the school secretary for years assisting the teaching principal in the office needs of the school. Betty taught in the Faith Formation program and for many years worked with the religious education program for special needs youth. She was one of the founders of the parish Ladies Guild, one of the women pioneers on the parish council and served for almost 30 years as a trustee. She chaired raffles, dinners, fundraisers and other activities for the betterment of the parish over the years.
Sister Helen Catherine Ruane was born and raised in Bridgeport. She was the middle child of seven children – five boys and two girls. She went to Black Rock School and graduated from Central High School.

She received her BA degree from St. Joseph College, now the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1944. Sister Helen, then Sister Mary Cecile, taught first grade in the old school at St. Mary’s from 1957-61.

After a few changes to other cities, Sister Helen returned to St. Mary’s in 1972. At St. Mary’s, she served as principal and also as a first grade teacher. She also taught Kindergarten for a few years. Changes came again in 1988 and Sister Helen moved to St. Joseph’s School in Meriden. Although Sister has retired from teaching, she goes to “The School for Young Children” in West Hartford once a week to read to the “little ones”.

Sister Helen has spent her life taking care of children. As she often says, “I always think that looking at the face of a child is looking at the face of God.”

Maureen Murphy attended St. Mary’s School, class of 1957. She was part of the first class to attend the new school for three years. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, and graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Mathematics.

Murphy received a Masters Degree in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University. She has been an active member of St. Mary Parish throughout her life. She worked the Summer Food Festival every year from its inception in 1978.

She served as a collection counter for 10 years in the mid 1970s and returned for five more years in the early 1990’s. She helps with decorating the church at Christmas and Easter, served as the coordinator of the commemorative book for the Church’s 125th Anniversary and serves as a volunteer for the monthly Connecticut Food Bank at St. Mary’s.

Murphy is a 35+ year volunteer for Special Olympics Connecticut, and has been the treasurer and vice president of the Valley division of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Al Altieri is a 1971 graduate of St. Mary was appointed Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Sikorsky Aerospace Services in August, 2012. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Harvard University and a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from the University of Connecticut.

A leader in community activities, he initiated the Sikorsky Supplier Golf Charity Event that has raised over $1 million in eight years for United Way and other local charities. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Eclipse Aerospace, Inc, the manufacturer of the Eclipse 550.
Stephen and Helen Dripchak. Steve graduated from Seymour High School, class of 1942 and the Junior College of Commerce, class of 1948. He was employed as an Accounting Manager by the Security Insurance Company of New Haven and retired from the Continental Insurance Co. in 1986.

He was a member of the first school board in the consolidation of St. Mary and St. Michael Parochial Schools in 1988. He was honored as a 1985 Volunteer of the Year by the Hartford Archdiocese

School Board for his assistance in the merge of our two financially troubled schools. He continued to volunteer at St. Michael’s Church for many years as a financial advisor and Trustee. He resigned as an active member of the positions in 2007 but continued in these roles emeritus. He was honored to be the recipient of the Archdiocesan Medal of appreciation in March 2007.

Helen graduated from St. Michael Grammar School, Class of 1937 and graduated from Derby High School Class of 1941. Helen was employed by the city of Derby for over 35 years. She started as an Accounting Clerk and retired as the City Clerk in 1988. She was the first female ever to be elevated as the City Clerk in the city of Derby, CT. Helen volunteered at St. Michael School and the church for many years and also at Griffin Hospital. S

She was the recipient of the Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation in March, 2008. Helen and her husband of 63 years are the parents of three children, 11 grandchildren and thre great-grandchildren.
